I have done quite a bit of research on puppy and adult dog foods. This information I share with you is not based on any scientifc research but more from my knowledge and experience.
First and foremost proper nutrition is essential for your new puppy's growth and development. It is an absoulte must that you feed your new family member a LARGE BREED PUPPY FORMULA.
Calcium content should be in the 0.7%-1.2% on a dry weight basis. Calories should be no less than 9% to maximum of 12%  and protein should range from 15% to 27%.
It is equally important to control the amount of food which is consumed. General rules of thumb are if your puppy is under 6 months old feed 3 times daily and allow him/her to digest as much as he/she wants but for a limited time.  (e.g. 10 minutes)
over 6 months feed only 2 times daily and allow him to ingest as much as he wants but again only for a limited time.
The investment in a premium food may initially cost more per bag because these high-quality formulas are high in nutrient density, however you will need to feed less and that can offset the cost.
Low cost food may be less expensive, but it isn't always a bargain and may not provide optimum nutrition.  Premium food makes sense both nutritionally because of consistent,, high-quality ingredients and economically because it provides;
  100% complete, balanced nutrition.
  High nutrient and energy density, which     translates into smaller feeding portions.
  A stable ingredient profile.
  Less vet visits.
  Less poopers to be scoopen.
